Greene County Extension tells plans for Extension & Outreach Week April 17-22

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Week is April 17-22. Iowa’s 100 county extension offices will host activities throughout the week to thank Iowans for their support of extension education efforts throughout the state.

“This celebration is one way we show our appreciation for the people who participate in our educational programs, as well as the many volunteers, community leaders, organizations, agencies and other partners who support our work in Greene County,” said Lori Mannel, county Extension director.

Educational programs are planned as follows in all four areas of Extension, 4-H & Youth, Ag & Natural Resources, Human Sciences, Community Development.

Monday, April 17, 4 to 5:30 pm. Career Exploration culinary class for students in grades 1-3. Youngsters will get hands-on experience in a commercial kitchen taught by culinary educators at the Greene County Career Academy. The cost is $10.

Tuesday, April 18, Herb Garden program. Plant a herb garden and learn how to grow, harvest, and use herbs. Greene County Extension office in Jefferson from 10 to 11:30 am, and also at the Churdan public library from 1 to 3:30 pm. The $15 cost will offset the cost of materials. Mike Witt, ISU Ag Specialist will be presenting.

Wednesday, April 19, 5:30 to 7 pm. Make a taco charcuterie board using tool on the Spend Smart Eat Smart website. Staff will guide participants through preparing recipes for their board. Cost of $15 includes all materials. The boards will be made by the Greene County High School woodworking class.

Thursday, April 20, 4 to 6 pm. Greene County Extension is partnering with ShineOn Designs/More Time to hold a 4-H $20 Challenge Workshop. Youngsters will get a tour of ShineOn by owner Jen Badger. After the tour More Time staff will help pick out the perfect outfit for each child for $20 or less. Once the outfits are selected, the group will walk to the Extension office where 4-H staff and volunteers will help participants fill out the fashion entry form, clothing report form and fashion show summaries. This workshop is open to all Greene County 4-H members and Clover Kids. Youth should register by April 19 and bring the $20 cost of the outfit the day of the event. Please register by April 19th and bring your $20 with you on the day of the event.

Friday, April 21, 9:30 to 10 am. Java & Juice at the Extension office. Coffee and refreshments with the staff and learn about what ISU Extension does in Greene County.

ISU Extension and Outreach is part of the federal Cooperative Extension Service — a network of more than 100 land-grant institutions, including Iowa State University, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture serving communities and counties across the United States. Every county in Iowa has an elected extension council that decides how to support ISU Extension and Outreach educational programs at the county level.

Greene County Extension Council members are chair Scott Weber, vice-chair Brent Badger, secretary Shari Minnehan, treasurer Pam Olerich, treasurer pro tem Keith Pedersen, and Dustin Fouch, Bruce Bahnson, Tracy Deal and Jeff Lamoureux.
